Carp bait

Son-in-law and I are planning on doing some bow fishing this year, anyone have an opinion on how to preserve some carp for trapping?

I've never tried to preserve it, just froze it. I've done meat chunks, 1" cubes, just by salting and draining a couple times and it worked well, not sure if something as soft as fish will hold up though.

Very good chance I'll have some extra carp if anyone is interested.
Heck I'll even deliver within a mile radius of my house;)

With the water up a little at Buckeye Lake I'm hoping they get the carp tournament going again this year. Talk about an easy way to get your bait.

Now to stay on subject, I have a small bucket of fish salted down now. going to pour off the juice and see how it's doing. This is my first time salting fish to use for bait. Have not had any rotten smell coming from the bucket all winter. So I guess it's doing ok.:)

yes i went to grand lake st.marys for the carp tourney. brought home over a 100. p-lan to do it again. i will post when it happens.

no reason to salt. just freeze and use. reuse if needed and don't worry about the rotten fish smell. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FRESH>

Hey Russ, let me know how your bucket turns out. What type of salt did you use? Table, rock or other
Don't feel like turning my chest freezer on for a bucket of fish.

I went out and just got a cheap bag of water softener salt. My daughter use to have a pool and she had several bags of pool salt left over when she sold it. I will be using it here shortly on the rest of the fish in the freezer. I'm guessing about any salt will work.

Checked it out today and drained the liquid off it. Dug down and checked and it's looking good. a few of the bottom pieces where mushy. I went and re done the bucket reusing and adding some more salt to it. I rotated the mushy pieces up toward the top.

I will try to remember later this summer to take some pictures to let you see what it looks like.
