anyone else notice this?

anyone else notice this? In legal sets column in the BT that you can't sell squirrel hides because they are not considered a furbearer , but in the trappin section of the rules & regs the guys in the picture with the fur have a whole hanger of squirrel hides and why can you sell the tail but not the hide? What about deer hides they ain't considered furbearers either but they get bought and sold too ??

I think you missed the point, Kevin. Is it legal to sell them? I have seen them at auctions but that doesn't mean its ok. Looks like we need some clarification.!

No, it's not legal to sell them. There is an exception made for selling the tails, just like there is an exception made for deer skins and I believe turkey skins.

Making it legal to sell squirrel skins is something that will be brought before the DOW.

I'll have to check out the picture.;)

The fur houses even state that they only buy the red squirrel hides, no fox or gray squirrel hides.
Don't know why they want the small reds , and not the bigger ones.

You're right, I'm guessing that's a picture that they took from their website photo gallery. Maybe they used it because the squirrels add color, like the guys red boxers? on the right:D

This is posted on the FHA aution site.

14. We only have a market for red squirrels. We do not accept black squirrels, grey squirrels, flying squirrels, or fox squirrels. We do not accept rabbit fur, bear gall bladders, teeth or claws detached from the bear hide.

Not possitive ,but I seem to recall the same on the NAFA auction site.

Personally I always thought that squirrel or woodchuck hides would make for good moccasins.
The leather is tough and strong.

That's just my thoughts, never had the time or ambition to try it.:P

I just would like know why we can sell fur from some animals and not others . I mean if it is legally harvested and a buyer wants it why can't we sell it ? Then on the other hand why can meat from some animals be sold and not others what is the difference

The difference is game animals and fur bearing animals.
You can sell the carcass of fur bearing animals.
You can not sell the carcass of game animals.

Two exceptions that I can think of are deer hides can be sold, but not the meat.
Squirrel tails can be sold, but not the meat or hide.
Also squirrel along with all other game animals can not be TRAPPED.

Read the rules and regulations each year, and keep it handy for reference.
Most of your questions will be answered there.

Yeah thats what I mean I know the rules but , why can I sell a coon hide or meat but not a rabbit. And could somebody tell the squirrels to stay out of blind sets they must not know they aren't legal to trap.
Any body that sets any amount of dry blind sets knows how many rabbits and squirrels find your blind sets and they make the best eatin no buckshot to pick .

there used to be a market for groundhog hides, there leather was considered the best for covering the sound box of a banjo . i know alot of fly tiers like the groundhog hair .

it doesn't make sence that you can sell a deer hide but not a squirrel hide
